Life

I've done this collection "Life" in a few days, a puzzle after another, between November and December 2015. I have tried that every puzzle raises a typical problem of Sokoban. There are some difficult puzzles, others are easier, all mixed, and there are two hard levels (#20 "cottage" and #32 "S"): If you can't solve them, leave them. As a whole, I think that it is a beautiful collection and fun to solve.

I have built this collection for peace in the world, and most especially to Syria, where any war had to have been!

You can download this collection here:

Life (35 puzzles)

Below I publish a old video of Pau Casals interpreting "El cant dels ocells" (The song of the birds). Pau Casals was born in El Vendrell (Barcelona, Spain), neighboring town to mine. The landscape in both peoples is the same: very hot and dry climate, soft light, white roads between vineyards... "El cant dels ocells" is a traditional Catalan Christmas song. All the Catalans we get excited to hear this melody.

With better sound here.

Pau Casals he composed the "Hymn of the United Nations", known as the "Hymn of Peace". On 24 October 1971, the day of the premiere, also interpreted "El cant dels ocells". Before, he spoke these words:

Peace has always been my greatest concern. I learnt to love it when I was but a child. When I was a boy, my mother – an exceptional, marvellous woman -, would talk to me about peace, because at that time there were also many wars. ...

I have not played the cello in public for many years, but I feel that the time has come to play again. I am going to play a melody from Catalan folklore: "El cant dels ocells" – The song of the birds. Birds sing when they are in the sky, they sing: "Peace, peace, peace", and it is a melody that Bach, Beethoven and all the greats would have admired and loved. What is more, it is born in the soul of my people, Catalonia.

Title: crossroads
Difficulty: 5

Who hasn't ever been at a crossroads? All crossroads have something mysterious and disturbing...

Title: round and round...
Difficulty: 5

This puzzle is inspired by the beautiful Russian folk song "Степь да степь кругом" (Steppe all around). The song tells the story of a coachman who was lost in the steppe  - round and round!... - and he died frozen cold. It is one of the most beautiful Russian songs I know.

Title: shelves
Difficulty: 5

This puzzle presents one of the most classic Sokoban problems: change all boxes to the opposite wall. The secret of the puzzle is the "tooth" from the bottom, which allows to reverse the direction of the boxes.

Title: bottle

Sometimes, fill a bottle is not so simple...

Title: stairs for kids

One of the most fascinating topics of Sokoban: rotatory structure with alternate goals. It is inspired by Přemysl Zíka, "Tertius gradus ad Olympo" #26.

Title: mandala
Difficulty: 6.5

Title: karakuri box
Difficulty: 6.5

A "karakuri box" (also called "puzzle box", "secret box", or "trick box") is a box that can only be opened through some obscure or complicated series of manipulations. The correct series of movements that can range from two to over 1500 moves. The karakuri box originated in the Hakone region of Japan at the turn of the 19th century...  Good luck!

A recurrent structure in Sokoban: storage in the center and rooms around. The classic model is Original #29.

Title: heart
Difficulty: 7

Sokoban lessons - Mazes

A maze is a structure without rooms (with regard to the concept of "room", see the explanation in "Sokoban lessons. Three boxes - with rooms"). In some cases, I also include puzzles with rooms, but only if these are equivalent to less than 8 % of the size of the puzzle. This criterion excludes puzzles that probably can be considered also mazes, but I have not found another criterion better.

With some exceptions, I do not include small puzzles (3, 4 boxes...).

In the initial position, placed boxes and not placed boxes, draw a double "Big Dipper" (the seven stars more visible of the Ursa Major). The goals area is the Chinese number seven, 七 (by the 7 stars). The interior walls are the Chinese characters - though slightly deformed - 北斗 (above) and 星 (below), so that together with the character 七 (goals area) they form the word 北斗七星 ("Big Dipper").
